Children’s Play Therapy Provides Invaluable Insight
In my comfortable studio I have a sand tray, with literally hundreds of different toys from which to choose. A child may select as many toys as they wish and are encouraged to create their own particular scenarios. I watch and ask about their feelings and thoughts while not intruding into the child’s own made-up world. Children will construct and enact elaborate stories, fantasies, and conversation while their minds are absorbed by playing with the toys. This often affords invaluable insight into what they’re really feeling and thinking. It is wonderful how freely children will express themselves, and how vivid their response is to the world around them. Play therapy can be conducted with or without the parent(s) in the session.

It is not uncommon for parents to be surprised by revelations that have surfaced in these sessions. I have seen more than one Mom or Dad benefit from playing with their child. By learning together, the family understands their child’s needs better. Balance can be restored to the whole family by improving communication skills.
